Unreliable cellular coverage indoors has been one of the drivers for Fixed Mobile Convergence (FMC), a solution enabling cell phones to operate over ubiquitous Wi-Fi hotspots and over Wi-Fi networks at home. Femtocells are an alternative to Wi-Fi based FMC solutions and are now reaching price points competitive with Wi-Fi access points (APs). Femtocells work with regular inexpensive cell phones to provide indoor coverage without requiring Wi-Fi enabled handsets.
