Fax Lives On in an IP World

As businesses and service providers migrate to VoIP networks, one technology that is often overlooked is fax. Yes, fax. Despite the rise of email, billions of fax pages are still sent each year. However, fax technology has advanced dramatically from the days of the walk-up fax machine -- today’s fax technology needs to integrate directly into office productivity tools, such as multi-function printers (MFPs), ERP and CRM systems to automate the delivery and receipt of fax documents in electronic format. Businesses are eager to integrate fax into their IP architecture and are looking for both in-house and hosted fax solutions. This session will cover in detail the technical challenges and the new technologies required to meet the demand for fax services in a converged IP network environment.



Yaakov Elkon, President & CEO, Graphnet

Mr. Yaakov Elkon has led Graphnet for nearly two decades through his focused vision, his strong leadership, an unmatched sense of business & work ethics, and a lifetime of expertise in computer based telecommunication systems. Mr. Elkon became CEO of the company in 1989 and provided the foundation that has allowed Graphnet to emerge as a global leader in the information transport industry. Prior to joining Graphnet, Mr. Elkon served as the Vice President of Messaging for Sprint Corporation. Before joining Sprint, he had a successful carrier at IBM for over 18 years first as a Senior Architect for large-scale systems then moving onto several managerial roles in Business Development with the Latin America & the Far East division. Mr. Elkon received a BSc & MSc degrees in Aeronautics & Astronautics as well as ScD degree in Computer Science – all from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.



Jerry Metcalf, Senior Director, Business and Corporate Development, Captaris, Inc.

Jerry Metcalf serves as senior director of business and corporate development for Captaris, Inc., bringing more than 25 years of experience in partnering, development, implementation and operation of software systems and products. While at Captaris, Jerry has been instrumental in developing OEM relationships with leading vendors in the Fax over IP (FoIP) market place, the strategic plan to extend Captaris’ position in transaction based document delivery, which lead to acquisitions of Teamplate’s workflow, IMR’s document management and Castelle’s appliance based fax products. Previous to that Jerry led the effort to license and acquire XML processing and data connection technologies.

Prior to Captaris, Jerry was senior vice president of engineering at Ansyr Technology, a firm that develops document workflow management software for mobile workers. Jerry has also held engineering, business development and product development positions at companies such as Conversa Corp., Stellar One Corp., Data I/O, Inc. and ATL a Philips company.

Jerry holds an M.E.E. in electrical engineering from Villanova University and a B.A. from the Philadelphia Musical Academy and has attended Wharton and Stanford executive courses.



James Rafferty, Director, Gateway Product Management, Dialogic

James Rafferty is the director of media gateway products at Cantata Technology. In this role, he is responsible for Cantata’s media gateway products and related market strategies. Previously, James was president of Human Communications, a leading technology consulting firm for telecommunications companies. James is also active in the standards process through his work with the Internet Engineering Task Force and the Third Generation Partnership Project (3GPP), and was instrumental in the development of the T.37 and T.38 IP fax standards. He speaks frequently at industry conferences and is a co-author of several IETF RFC standards. James holds a BS and a master’s degree from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, New York.
