Post-Show Wrap

When in Rome do as the Romans do is the expression and we tried to keep up with the conversations at the expo and conference. This show featured an incredible array of Italian speakers who talked to the various aspects of IP Communications. The expo had over 3,500 attendees and featured people showing VoIP, WiFi, WiMAX, 3G, and Triple Play technologies. Visiting the show floor, with over 100 exhibitors, was a rich community of business network managers, carriers, channel partners and resellers.

Many sessions were in Italian and dealt with the implementation issues of Open Source implementations when using Digium’s Asterisk. Other sessions looked at Fixed Mobile Convergence [FMC] and IPTV.

Carl Ford, our community developer, stayed with the folks looking for the meet point between the web 2.0 crowd and the IP Multimedia Subsystems [IMS]. In these sessions, Adrian Scarse of ETSI, Malcolm Wardlaw of BT, Arjun Roychowdhury of Hughes Systique and Claude Florin of HP showed a market ready to benefit from a Network Applications Program Interface [NAPI]. Others showed us how to look at identity, where Peer 2 Peer was taking us and what concerns lay ahead. Many of these discussions will benefit from the group moving forward at Fall VON in Boston on October 29th - November 1st.
