If you run a business and you think social networking could help you, but the idea sounds alien, there might be a place to turn for help.

Hundreds of the Twitterati gathered in San Francisco over the weekend at TWTRCON – yes, even the name of the event is in “text-ese” – to share thoughts on how businesses can use Twitter successfully. Whether you’re a novice who’s never tweeted, or someone more advanced whose social networking has thus far been limited to your personal life, TWTRCON provided some ideas for jumping into the social networking business world.

Frederic Paul of bMighty.com posted the five business Twitter tips he came away with from TWTRCON:

  1. “Know how many characters are taken up by "RT YOURNAME " so you can keep your Tweets short enough to be easily re-tweeted!”
  2. “Don't Tweet too much. Try to find the Tweet-spot – the number of Tweets that gets the most response. Use the number of reTweets to measure each Tweet's immediate impact.”
  3. “Get comfortable with Twitter search. You can find out fast what people are thinking about your company, long before they call or e-mail you.”
  4. “Don't worry about followers. If you help people, they'll find you when they need you."
  5. "Filter, sort, post. Repeat!"

Paul provides further analysis for each of his tips. You can find that here or by clicking on the source link below.
