Appeals Court Knocks Down Case Against Twitter User

07/10/2009

A man accused of potentially causing a panic by urging people to take all of their money out of a bank is one step closer to being cleared of all charges.

Jean Anleu was set to stand trial for his “tweet” that told people to empty out their accounts from a bank in Guatemala. That same bank has been at the center of a political scandal. Calling the rural development bank “the bank of the corrupt,” Anleu was arrested because his writing might incite a panic.

But an appeals court said the case lacks merit. Anleu won’t be completely in the clear until prosecutors officially drop the charges against him.
