Apple App Store Marks 1 Billion Download Milestone

04/24/2009

An application called “Bump” is the 1 billionth app downloaded from Apple’s App Store. A 13-year-old boy from Connecticut didn’t have to pay anything for it, but he’ll get a $10,000 iTunes gift card, an iPod Touch, a Time Capsule and a MacBook Pro just for downloading it. Ooooh ... how ‘bout downloading “Freebird” 10,101 times? (Not quite that many if you live in a state that slaps taxes on Internet purchases.)

Apple reached the historic mark in just nine months. The world’s largest applications store has more than 35,000 programs available to consumers in 77 countries.

Another milestone is surely right around the corner. Doing the math – let’s see, this plus that is this, carry the two ... – in just the few hours since Apple made its announcement until it was posted on this Web site, almost 1 million more apps were downloaded.
