Free iPhone App=Cheap VoIP Calls

Looking for cheap calling overseas? Have an iPhone? Don’t feel overwhelming billing loyalty to AT&T Inc.? Truphone has just the ticket with a free VoIP app for the iPhone that as of today runs on the cellular network rather than requiring Wi-Fi to work.

Whereas before, using Truphone for toll bypass/cheap calls required getting connected to Wi-Fi, the new Truphone Anywhere can run over a GSM cellular network. It makes a local cellular connection to a Truphone server, which applies against existing AT&T buckets of minutes and so is essentially free, and then converts the call to VoIP for a budget-friendly 6-cent-per-minute average international tariff.

The company has also added inbound calling, so Truphone calls between two iPhones are free. Users can see a list of available Truphone callees in their address book thanks to new presence integration.

Truphone doesn’t enable text messaging though, so you’re still paying AT&T to message your brother in Japan, mother in England or niece backpacking across Italy.
