iBasis Notches Mobile Transport Deal in Baltics

IP telephony provider iBasis says that the BITE Group, one of the largest telcos in the Baltic states, will use iBasis to carry its international mobile voice traffic from Latvia and Lithuania.

The customer win furthers iBasis’ strategy of lining up international wholesale deals with national and regional mobile carriers. In November, iBasis, which is based in Burlington, Mass., introduced a slate of IP-based voice services that it plans to sell to “all telecommunications market segments from cost-driven wholesale carriers to retail mobile operators worldwide.”

The new offerings grow out of iBasis’ affiliation with Dutch carrier Royal KPN NV. In October 2007, iBasis acquired KPN’s Global Carrier Services business unit in a deal that gave KPN a 51-percent stake in iBasis.

That merger, said iBasis, makes the U.S. company one of the three largest carriers of international phone calls worldwide.
