Michael Jackson Crowned King of the Internet

07/07/2009

Content delivery network company Akamai said today it delivered nearly 2.2 million live and on-demand streams of, what else, the Michael Jackson memorial held at Staples Center in Los Angeles.

The much-hyped service turned out to be one of the biggest online events. Ever. In fact, the event increased Web page response times by nearly three times, causing video to stall on certain news sites.

Meanwhile, tributes to the King of Pop accounted for 30 percent of all tweets on microblogging site Twitter today. On top of that, 1 million Facebook users made about 800,000 status updates.
