Microsoft Makes Good on Promised Layoffs

05/06/2009

Microsoft Corp. (MSFT) on Tuesday made good on the 5,000 job cuts it promised in January.

The software maker laid off thousands of workers in the United States and overseas; the number reportedly totals 3,000 but Microsoft did not confirm that.

Problem is, according to an e-mail sent from Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer to employees, more positions could be slashed if the economy doesn’t turn around soon.

The 5,000 cuts mark the first companywide layoffs in Microsoft’s history.
