Uncle Sam Wants You … to Ditch Facebook

Fearing potential compromises to national security or inadvertent disclosures of troop movements and the like, U.S. military officials this week began a review of the use of Twitter and Facebook by active personnel. It also has banned Marines from using either on military computers.

After a thorough review of the risks and the benefits of social media for the military, a new official policy will be issued in September.

In sharp contrast, military folk in the U.K. this week were told by their government to use Facebook and Twitter to keep their mates apprised of what they’re up to. The Ministry of Defense said it would also sponsor individuals that want to write regular blogs.
